Wisdom from Heaven for Life on Earth

With the pandemic in full swing, television and video has never been more prevalent in the lives of Americans. Each day watching video brings a new batch of shootings, attacks and conflict.  Kickboxing fights, gun fights, and social/political fights are only a small sample of violence available on TV.  Our culture is not just full of conflict, but sadly physical violence is not only celebrated but used to entertain.  Yet this eye candy has devastating effects.  L.R. Huesman conducted a study published in Developmental Psychology that found that children exposed to violence on TV were more prone to violence as adults.  Violence results in destroyed families, prison sentences and broken relationships.  God's wisdom from Proverbs reminds us that we should not "envy a violent man or choose any of his ways" (Prov 3:31). God hates violence. The gladiator fights in the first century were blood sport for entertainment and Christians were the first people to reject this entertainment as being immoral. There is always a great temptation to watch the train wrecks of violence found in The Sopranos or Godfather as entertainment, but they never show the weeping child longing for his murdered father. We naturally look away from the injuries and the long term pain. We enjoy the violence but not the funeral. As you watch TV and video this month, God's Word reminds us to turn away from the train wreck.  Make an effort to renew your mind with worship and the gospel.  It reflects God's wisdom from heaven for life here on earth.
